LEAD STORY / VIL-001

Velvet and the Ownerless Collection

Whenever an object with a doubtful history reaches auction, Velvet sends an elegant calling card. He claims to return things to their rightful place, while following clues to his family's scattered collection. One job leads to a child who treasures a music box as a memory of a mother. For once, Velvet cannot justify taking it. Cipher then uncovers uncomfortable evidence about the family's own dealings. As Ivory prepares to destroy the records, Velvet must choose between protecting the family name and revealing the whole history. He publishes the ledger and helps owners reclaim their objects. His taste for theatrical entrances survives: the next job still begins with a beautiful card.

Character connections

Opponent in trade: VIL-002 Ivory. Information contact: VIL-004 Cipher. A darker reflection of collecting: VIL-006 Gilt.

Character arc

From dressing possession up as fairness, through acknowledging family responsibility, to exposing the truth instead of deciding ownership for everyone else.

First-episode idea

The Calling Card: Velvet's carefully worded warning is mistaken for a wedding invitation. The recipient asks whether dinner is included, and the job stalls over printing and wording.
