Across a shifting island chain, guiding lamps are going out. Travellers can no longer find their way home. The academy sends mages with spectacular fire spells, but none can keep the old lamps burning overnight. Ember, whose flame fits in one palm, accidentally revives an abandoned lighthouse and quietly accepts the task. With Atlas, Moss and Skillet, she discovers that each lamp is tied to a forgotten piece of island life. Trying to prove herself with a bigger spell, she nearly burns the supplies. She admits her fear of being left behind. Her companions stay, shielding her flame and helping her navigate. Together they reconnect the lamps with a small light that lasts.
From measuring worth by power, through a failed attempt at spectacle, to accepting the steady strength of her own gift.
First-episode idea
Not a Big Enough Flame: after another failed fireball, Ember sits down in defeat. Skillet sets a pan over her little flame. Soon the whole party is asking her to keep it going.
